Interlex FAQs

How to perform some basic functions in Interlex

Q1: How do I create a new term in Interlex?

Creating a term involves 5 required steps: 1) log in or create an account; 2) Click “Add new term; 3) Give your term a label (must be unique); 4) Verify that this term does not exist already in Interlex; 5) Supply required metadata. See “Creating a new term in Interlex” for detailed instructions.

Q2: How do I add a new relationship to an existing term in Interlex?

There are two ways to add a relationship that links one term to another, e.g, “cerebellum is part of brain”. The simplest is to select the “relationships” tab on the term of interest and select the “add a new relationship” function. Using this route will automatically add the term of interest to the “add a new relationship form” as the primary term or subject of the triple. If the top term has not been populated, start typing in the name and the field will autocomplete from existing terms. This form can also be accessed when you are editing a term, but you have to re-enter the term into the form. After the top term has been populated, select a relationship. Start typing in a relationship name, e.g., “is part of”, then select the relationship term from the autocomplete menu.

Q3: How do I see what relationships have been added to Interlex?

To see a list of relationships that have been added to Interlex, select the “relationship’ type on the left upper panel (remember to unclick the “term” facet) and then click “submit”. From the home page, click on the search icon to be taken to the results where the Types menu and facets are visible.

Q4: How do I see what term sets are available in Interlex?

A list of term sets can be retrieved by selecting the termset facet available in the Types menu on the upper left and then hitting “Submit”.

Q5: How do I add a term to an Interlex community?

The SciCrunch infrastructure is built around the concept of communities, each represented by their own SciCrunch Portal. When accessing Interlex via a community portal, Interlex records that the term was entered by that community, both to provide provenance and to allow individual communities to build their own vocabularies. If you access Interlex through the main site, you can still tag a term with your community by using the pull down”community” menu when creating a new term (see Creating a new term in Interlex). If you are not adding this term as part of a specific community, select “scicrunch”

Q6: How do I download terms?

  1. Single terms: You can export a term and its metadata using the export function available in the upper right of the window. Choose your preferred format from the drop down menu.

  1. Set of terms from a search result: You can download a set of terms returned from a search as a CSV by switching from the snippet view (default) to the table view using the Download function available in the upper right of the table. Note that downloads using this mechanism are restricted to 1000 terms.

3. Termset or collection of terms: Coming soon
